The Tiriac Open is the only ATP 250 tournament ever held in Romania and the longest running sports event in the country. Organised between 1996 and 2016 for 21 consecutive editions, the competition was named after Ion Tiriac and Ilie Nastase, the greatest tennis players in the history of Romania, Grand Slam Doubles winners and 3-time Davis Cup finalists. After an eight-year gap the tournament returned in 2024 and repositions Bucharest on the international tennis map. Over time, top-ranked ATP players have raced for the title on the Romanian clay: David Ferrer won his first ATP Tour title here in 2002; Gilles Simon holds the record for the most triumphs (2007, 2008 & 2012); Grigor Dimitrov overcame the defending Champion Lukas Rosol in 2014 while Fernando Verdasco grabbed the title in 2016. Nothing more thrilling for the tennis lovers in Bucharest: native player Horia Tecau holds the record of four doubles titles in 2012, 2013, 2014 and the last one, alongside countryman Florin Mergea, in 2016. In 2015, local icons Marius Copil and Adrian Ungur won their first ATP Tour doubles title.
