From "The Field Lawn Tennis Calendar" (1889): "The fourth annual tournament of the above county association was held at Newcastle-on-Tyne, on the new Constabulary Cricket Ground, on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday of last week. The first three days the weather was of the most enjoyable description, but on the fourth was disastrous to a successful termination of the meeting, a steady downpour of rain falling from ten o'clock in the morning until seven o'clock. After a consultation between the stewards and the players it was decided, in order to meet the convenience of the latter, to play off the finals of the single championships in the covered court in Saint George's Drill Hall, the use of which was kindly granted by Colonel Dowling.

"The finals of the gentlemen's doubles, the handicaps and the county events were played in Portland Park on Wednesday. Reverting to the first three days' play, it must be noted that the courts, nine in number, were, considering the heavy rains of the previous three weeks, in good order and seemed to improve as the week wore on. A capital entry for the different events had been received..."
