About

Originally his surname was Gachet, in the first half of the 1920s he was formally adopted by Włodzimierz Czetwertyński (president of the Warsaw Music Society, co-founder of the International Chopin Competitions), who was most likely his biological father. He dominated the domestic courts in the period 1925–1928, after which he ended his career (injury? Absorbing studies? Marriage?) And nothing is known about his further life ...
He won 4 Polish champion titles, including 2 singles (in a row), and in the 1928 edition he reached the finals of all three competitions, but he only won the mix. One of our first Davis Cup participants. And the term "participant" is as precise here as possible, because while crawling in international competitions, the White and Reds received strict lessons from the powers of the time. Suffice it to say that in four matches we did not win at least a point, and Czetwertyński is the first to win ... a set for Poland in this competition - he broke it in 1927 in Brussels to Belgian Willard Botsford (2: 6, 5: 7, 6: 4, 2: 6). He also performed at the Roland Garros twice. First he was eliminated right away, but the second time he reached the third round, in which he fell to one of the famous French tennis "Musketeers", the future winner of the tournament, René Lacoste (3: 6, 6: 8, 3: 6). In the 1927 season, he also reached the quarter-finals of the then heavily staffed tournament in Monte Carlo. He played a lot in France (Angers, Cannes, Nice ...), met the European leaders in several tournaments and has a slightly positive balance in them (more wins than losses).
In the Plebiscite of "Przegląd Sportowy" in 1926 he was ranked 5th among the 10 Best Polish Athletes. And five years later he was awarded (for "merits in the field of sport") the Silver Cross of Merit. Several dozen other sportsmen were honored with him, but among tennis players only - the Bronze Cross - Wiera Richterówna (Polish champion 1921–1927), who was also then just a few years after her career ended. On the list of the awarded, Czetwertyński is listed as a "student in Warsaw". Janusz Kusociński also got "only" silver then - probably because it was before his Olympic gold (Los Angeles 1932). In "Monitor Polski" our legendary master appears as "technician-gardener in Ołtarzew" ...
