Fognini wins thriller final
What a thriller: The Italian, Fabio Fognini, won the bet-at-home Open 2013. He defeated the qualifier, Federico Delbonis, who had beaten Roger Federer, 4-6, 7-6(8) and 6-2 and even had to fend off three match points before wrapping up the match.
On this lovely summer day with temperatures reaching 30 degrees centigrade, the “Centre Court of the world” was fully packed. However, the 7,500 spectators had to wait until the fifth game to see a real treat when Fabio Fognini, who used the entire half of his court, acted from necessity and fended off two aggressive balls of his opponent, before he counterattacked one of Delbonis’s smashes with a backhand down the line. Incredible. Clay court tennis at its best.
