From "Pastime", October 10, 1894: "The institution of an Austrian Championship tournament is considered by its promoters to have been encouragingly successful. It was held in Prague on September 28, 29 and 30, and was exceedingly well attended. Indeed, in Austria lawn tennis is in very high social esteem, and the greater part of the players and the onlookers belonged to the nobility. Among the latter were the Governor, Count Thun, the Countess Thun and a number of their friends. The Count is himself an excellent player, and he had consented to distribute the prizes, but was prevented by a summons to Vienna, which reached him on the closing day.

"The chief event on the programme, the Austrian Championships, was won by H.W. Gandon, an Englishman residing in Vienna, whose easy and graceful play gained him general admiration. According to the Austria custom, each of the champions received, in addition to his challenge cup, a decoration in the form of a star, set with precious stones; and there were further prizes for the different events, presented by the Governor, by Baron Alfred Ringhoffer, and by the clubs of Prague.

"The Austrian ladies made a new social departure by competing not only in mixed doubles, but also in singles. As the tournament is to be an annual affair, and English players will be warmly welcomed by the committee, it is to be anticipated that it will before long become well known to many of our countrymen, who cannot fail to enjoy a visit to the ancient and beautiful city on such an errand. The committee consisted of Dr S. Rosenbaum, and Messrs Ehrmann, Ludwig Stasny and E. Weiszacker."
