From The Marlborough Express, 25 September 1916

Captain Lancelot Shadwell Jennings, who is reported to have been killed in action in France, was a nephew of the Venerable Archdeacon Thomas Samuel Grace, of Blenheim. The deceased officer had a distinguished scholastic and athletic career. Entering Nelson College with a scholarship from The Brightwater School in 1901, he rose to the position of Head of the School, and in 1906 won a Junior University Scholarship, which he took up at Canterbury College.

While at Nelson, he played in the first fifteen and was captain of the cricket team, also acting as captain of the Nelson representative team against Taranaki and Wellington in 1906. Captain Jennings gained the degrees of Master of Arts and Bachelor of Science at Canterbury College, and represented that institution in the inter-collegiate tennis tournament tie. He was also a successful competitor in the New Zealand tennis arena, attaining to championship honours.

He had been on the teaching staff of the Waitaki High School for some years prior to enlisting. In 1915, he married Miss Bella Dytes MacIntosh Cross, M.A., another distinguished student of Canterbury College.
