From Le Vélo, 17 September 1896:

We announced yesterday the tragic end of Mr René Defert. This sad death was learned with deep regret in the sporting world. René Defert was one of the most loyal members of the Racing-Club de France committee. He was vacationing in Auxerre, with his uncle, Mr Cnailley-Bert. When thinking he was taking antipyrine, he absorbed corrosive sublimate.

René Defert died just when his past successes predicted a brilliant future for him. He was preparing for his degree in physical sciences and his work did not prevent him from being an ardent cyclist and a feared lawn tennis player on the courts of the Racing-Club de Paris. We will miss the fervent sportsman he was, but much more the affectionate comrade and the prudent adviser who has left us.
