Russell MacNaghten was the brother of fellow lawn tennis player Hugh Vibart Macnaghten. Russell studied classics and law at Cambridge University, England, and later lived and worked in Tasmania and Canada.

Professor of Greek at University College, British Columbia; Assistant Professor of Classics at McGill University, Montreal, Canada.
