The son of the late Harry and Irene Sweeney Faught. He was a 1943 graduate of the University of Notre Dame where he was the captain of the tennis team and he was awarded All American honors as the center on the Irish basketball team. As a sophomore, he set the individual game scoring record at Madison Square Garden. Upon graduation, he entered the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific at the rank of Ensign. He later played professional basketball with the Cleveland Rebels of the National Basketball Association.
