Claude Erskine Farrer was the second son and third child of four of Thomas Farrer, 1st Baron Farrer (who was raised to the peerage but only in 1893 after Claude’s death, so Claude was not styled “The Honourable”), and his wife Frances Erskine (1825-1870), daughter of the historian and orientalist William Erskine (1773-1852), and his wife Maitland Mackintosh, daughter of James Mackintosh by his first wife.

Claude Farrer’s elder sister was Ida Darwin [née Emma Cecilia Farrer, who married Horace Darwin, son of the naturalist Charles Darwin]; his elder brother was Thomas Farrer, 2nd Baron Farrer; his younger brother was Noel Farrer, the civil servant, who also took part in some lawn tennis tournaments.

Claude Erskine Farrer attended Eton public school before going up to Cambridge University, where he matriculated at Trinity College in the Michaelmas term of 1882. While at university, he notably twice reached the final match in the nascent men’s doubles event at Wimbledon, in 1885 and 1886, both times with fellow Cantabrigian Arthur J. Stanley. They were beaten in the final match on both occasions by the Renshaw twins, William and Ernest.
