Scientist/Botanist: Robert Whistler Wallace (1867-1955)

Robert Whistler Wallace was proprietor of R. Wallace & Co., Kinfield Gardens, Saint John Street, Colchester, Essex, England. Started originally by Dr Alexander Wallace, father of R.W. Wallace as the New Plant and Bulb Company. Later Robert W. Wallace & Co., The Old Gardens, Tunbridge Wells. Kent England. These nurseries had been Russell’s Nurseries (formerly Crisp & Son) and Mr Wallace moved his stock here.

Magnificent nursery for hardy plants. Specialists in Irises for many years. Introducers of the Foster seedlings and most of the Bliss varieties. Also specialists in Azaleas, Lilies and many other groups of plants. Iris catalogue began in 1888.

Robert W. Wallace, V.M.H., recieved his Victoria Medal of Honour in 1923 and the firm the Lawrence Gold Medal for Irises in 1820 and the Coronation Cup in 1914 for Japanese Irises. Letters 1919, 1936. Wallace also received the Foster Memorial Plaque in 1931.
