This player’s first name is spelt Blayney in some sources. He was the youngest of nine siblings from a very sporting family that included Willoughby Hamilton, winner of the men’s singles title at Wimbledon in 1890. Blaney Hamilton excelled at cricket, at which he represented Ireland internationally, as a right-handed batsman and left-arm spin bowler; he also played lawn tennis, badminton and hockey with great proficiency. His son, named Willoughby after his uncle, was the world’s best badminton player circa 1934.
