About

Franz Soyka came from a well-to-do Jewish family in Prague. His parents were Ernst Soyka and Pauline Soyka (née Goldfinger). Like a number of other European Jews, the changing political situation in the late 1930s forced Franz Soyka to leave his homeland and emigrate, in his case to the United States of America. He left the port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands on board the Statendam on 22 October 1939 and arrived in the port of New York on 31 October 1939. Franz Soyka was naturalized as an American citizen seven years later, in December 1946, in New Orleans, Louisiana, where he eventually settled after emigrating. He worked as a tennis coach in the USA and also acquired a reputation as a gifted artist in later life. His anglicized first name was Francis.
