Report "Canvas Courts came into existence in 1905 when the Heights Casino first opened. Curiously enough the canvas was designed to spare the boards so the lower tennis court could be used for grand balls. It was feared the tennis players might injure the boards for the dancers.
It was soon found that the canvas gave the ball a bounce similar to that of the grass surface."
