From "The Field Lawn Tennis Calendar" (1888): "The Chiswick Park Club has once more obtained a good entry, both as regards quality and quantity. For the open singles, sixteen names had been sent in, including Mr Ernest Lewis and Mr Harry Grove, besides other good players. The Duke of Devonshire added a 50-guinea challenge cup to this event, and it was decided that the winner should also hold the title of champion of Middlesex.
