About

Edward E. Tanner was the son of Alonzo Tanner (1822-1889) and his second wife, Sarah Desirée Tanner (née Fisher; 1826-1904). Alonzo Tanner was a distinguished lawyer, real estate investor and public figure, who at one point practised law with Stephen Grover Cleveland (1837-1908). The latter would serve as President of the United States of America from 1885 to 1889 and again from 1893 to 1897.

Like his father before him, the lawn tennis player Edward E. Tanner became a lawyer. Edward married Mary Williams on 20 May 1890 in Buffalo, New York. They had three children together, one of whom was Edward E. Tanner II (1894-1969), who also became a lawyer.

The second Edward E. Tanner married Ethel Thacker in 1920. The younger of their two children was Edward E. Tanner III (1921-76), who became a bestselling author of several books under the pseudonym Patrick Dennis. His works include the novel “Auntie Mame: An Irreverent Escapade”, which was first published in 1955, and became the basis for a stage play, a film, a stage musical (“Mame”) and a film musical. The Auntie Mame of the title was said to be based on Edward E. Tanner III’s Aunt Marion, eldest daughter of Edward E. Tanner I, the lawn tennis player.
