Report From "The Field Lawn Tennis Calendar" (1887): "The annual open tournament of the Howth Lawn Tennis Club, which at its inception was nothing better nor worse than the general run of such celebrations, has in the course of the last few years rapidly made its way to the front rank of Irish tournaments; in fact, as things are at present, it is only looked upon as second to the All-Ireland Lawn Tennis Championships at Fitzwilliam Square, and, as far as general arrangements and perfection of detail go, it fairly vies with the big réunion referred to.

"This pleasing state of affairs is almost entirely due to the energy and experience of the tournament committee, and we have no hesitation in stating that the club is indeed lucky to be able to command the services of such a competent and hard-working team trio as Mr Ronald MacDougall, Mr Cheney Knox and Mr Dawson Knox.

"For the benefit of those who do not know the locale, it may be stated that the club courts, five in number, are picturesquely situated on the hill which gives it name to the pleasant seaside resort, and which commands a splendid view of Dublin Bay and the surrounding coast scenery. Being within half an hour's run by train of the metropolis, Howth may be regarded as easy of access, and when we have added to this the attractions of a capital programme, and all the accessories of a first-class tournament, small wonder it is that the Howth affair receives substantial patronage from players.

"Indeed, in this connection the executive may fairly claim a record as Irish tournaments go, seeing that the half-dozen events on the programme obtained considerably over two hundred entries. Wet weather on 26 July caused the commencement to be postponed until the following day, and the tournament was not concluded until Monday last."
