"The Beckenham Cricket Ground is well known as one of the prettiest spots devoted to sports in the London district. Its annual athletic meetings stand in the foremost rank, while the cricket matches are also above the average. Although possessing a large number of lawn tennis players among its members, it has not hitherto boasted an open tournament, but this year, owing to the energy of Mr George Schofield, the honorary secretary, a very successful one has been organised.

"The programme consisted of five events, the principal of which were the Kent All-Comers' Championship singles, and the gentlemen's singles handicap. The former designation was adopted so that the event may not be confused with the Kent Championship, announced to be held on the Blackheath Club ground next month, which is only open to players possessing the qualification necessary for Kent County Cricket. [...]

"It was arranged that play should not commence until the afternoon, and consequently the ample space at the disposal of the executive had to be largely encroached upon, thirteen courts being placed at their disposal. The turf was in capital condition, for which the groundsman, Tate, deserves every praise, and the arrangements were excellent."
