About

Arthur J. Stanley was born in London in June 1853, the son of Charles Stanley, a stockbroker from Rotherham in Yorkshire, and Annie Stanley (née Stanniforth), who was from Sheffield. Arthur J. Stanley attended Repton public school in Derbyshire before going up to Cambridge University. Like his father before him, he later became a stockbroker.

Arthur J. Stanley notably twice reached the final match in the nascent men’s doubles event at Wimbledon, in 1885 and 1886, both times with fellow Cantabrigian Claude E. Farrer. They were beaten in the final match on both occasions by the Renshaw twins, William and Ernest.
