From "The Field Lawn Tennis Calendar" (1887): The third annual tournament promoted by the above club took place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, July 1, 2 and 3, on the Heaton ground. Mr C. Liddell again acted as honorary secretary, and the arrangements made by him were very good. A band was in attendance each day. Ayres' balls, nets and posts, supplied by Mr H.A. Murton, Newcastle, gave every satisfaction. The weather throughout the three days was splendid, and the attendance very good."
