From "The Field Lawn Tennis Calendar" (1887): "The Jephson Gardens, as they always do, looked most beautiful, but the turf was not in the best condition for lawn tennis, the heavy rain of the few previous days having thoroughly soaked the ground. The lawns, too, are slightly on the slope, but we hear that by next year the committee have every intention of making them level.

"The attendance was fairly good on each day, and it is to be hoped that this year the meeting has not been a loss. The prizes looked well up to their advertised value, and this year arrangements had been made that the winning competitors might change them up to their full value at the shops at which they were bought. The weather on all three days was fine, though at one time on Tuesday there was every prospect of a heavy storm..."
