About

From Pastime, 1 September 1886:

John Redfern Deykin was born on 27 July 1861, and was educated at the Birmingham and Edgbaston Proprietary School and Pembroke College, Oxford. At school he took a prominent part in outdoor games, and carried off a great many prizes in the annual athletic sports, and at the university he gained his blue as one of the representatives of Oxford at Lillie Bridge in the weight-pulling competition.

He is also well known as a rugby player under rugby union rules, and was last year elected captain of the Midland Counties team. As a member of the Moseley team, he assisted in April last at the memorable defeat of the crack South Wales fifteen, on their own ground, at Cardiff.

As a lawn tennis player Deykin is entitled to credit for the perseverance with which he has studied to improve his play, and for the pluck which he has invariably shown when matched with an antagonist of skill superior to his own. His style is remarkable on account of the fact that he plays with his left hand only, having recently given up the practice, common with ambidextrous players, of occasionally transferring the racket to the right hand, in order to improve his backhand stroke.

He plays a hard and vigorous game, taking every opportunity to kill a weak return, and never despairing of getting back any ball until it is clearly proved to be beyond his reach. He is tall and powerfully built, standing almost 6 feet in height, and weighing about 12 stone, 7 pounds.
