From “Pastime”, August 17, 1887: “Torquay, although a town where a tournament should flourish excellently well, has until this year been without this latest sign of civilisation. Thanks to the enterprise of a few players belonging to the Torquay Club, this want has at last been supplied and with a success that the most sanguine of the promoters could hardly have anticipated. [...] The general arrangements are excellent. The ground, a very pretty one, is ornamented with tents and bunting. All the courts are roped and staked, and ample seating is provided for the accommodation of the spectators.”
