Wilfred Milne was born in Chertsey, Surrey, England in March 1857. In 1881, he won his first singles title at the Saint George’s Hill Open in Weybridge, Surrey. He competed at the Wimbledon Championships 13 times between 1881 and 1900. He had an impressive record at the Championships, where he took part in the men’s singles event seven years in a row. His best results were reaching the quarter-finals stage: in 1884, when he lost to Ernest Renshaw; and in 1887, when he lost to Charles Lacy Sweet.

He took part in the men’s doubles event at Wimbledon nine times between 1884 and 1900, reaching the quarter-finals five times, in 1884, 1887, 1888, 1892 and 1898. In addition, he was a semi-finalist in 1886 partnering with Charles Ross, when they lost to Patrick Bowes-Lyon and Herbert Wilberforce; and in 1891, when he partnered Arthur Stanley and lost to Harry Barlow and Ernest Renshaw.

Milne’s other singles highlights include winning the Teignmouth and Shaldon Open in 1885 and the Houndiscombe Open in Plymouth in 1888. He was also a runner-up to the Irishman Ernest Browne at the West of England Championships in Bath in 1883, to Ernest Lewis at the Torquay Open in 1887, at the West of England Championships again in 1889, when he lost to James Baldwin, and at the Torquay Open again in 1890, when he was beaten by Edward Avory.

Wilfred Milne died in June 1919 at Mutford, Suffolk, England age 62.
