Gaël Sébastien Monfils is a French professional tennis player. He is the French No. 1, currently at a career-high singles ranking of world No. 6 and winning 6 singles titles in his time on tour, despite reaching 25 finals. He was the runner-up at the Paris Masters in 2009 and 2010 and the runner-up in the 2016 Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters. He reached the semi-finals of the 2008 French Open and did likewise at the 2016 US Open.
His father, Rufin, a former soccer player, comes from island of Guadeloupe.He is an agent for France Telecom. His mother, Sylvette, comes from island of Martinique she is a nurse. His younger brother, Daryl, who partnered Gael at 2012 Montpellier. Considers Arthur Ashe to be his favourite player. Off court walks around with his iPod listening to music, in particular R&B. If he didn’t play tennis he would play basketball, NBA team Detroit Pistons his favourite basketball player is Carmelo Anthony.
As a junior Monfils compiled a singles win/loss record of 83–22, reaching the No. 1 junior combined world ranking in February 2004. In 2004 he won the Boys' Singles titles at the Australian Open, the French Open and Wimbledon and did not drop a set in Australia and lost only one set each in Paris and Wimbledon.
In 2003, was runner-up at Orange Bowl and USTA Winter International Championships. Best friends are countrymen and former juniors Josselin Ouana, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Paterne Mamata. Named ATP Newcomer of Year in 2005.
He was crowned International Tennis Federation youth world champion.
