About

Frederick Bendall attended Ipswich School before going up to Cambridge University, where he studied Classics. When World War One began, he was employed as a teacher at Bridlington School in the town of Bridlington, East Yorkshire. During the ensuing conflict, he saw action in several countires. In the interwar years he was employed in the inspectorate of the Board of Education, now the Ministry of Education. He was Director of Army Education from 1940-42 before returning to the staff of the Ministry of Education.

From Bridlington School records: Bendall, Lieutenant-Colonel Frederick William Duffield, C.M.G (H). Captain O.C. contingent 1910-1914. Promoted Temporary Lieutenant-Colonel September 1914. Appointed to raise and command 2/3rd Battalion London Regiment (Territorial Force). Service abroad: Malta, December 1914-April 1915; the Sudan, April 1915-August 1915. O.C. British Troops, Khartoum. Gallipoli, Suvla Bay, September 1915 – evacuation – with 29th Division. Invalided home (frostbite) January 1916. France, July 1916, 56th Division.

Commanded 8th Battalion Middlesex Regiment (Territorial Force) Battle of Somme, second Battle of Arras, third Battle of Ypres. Substantive Lieutenant-Colonel March 1917. Despatches (twice) 1917. Severely wounded 16 August 1917. C.M.G. 1 January 1918. Passed for Home Service 22 May 1918, and so employed June 1918-April 1919. Relinquished commission through ill health caused by wounds 24 April 1919, retaining rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. Re-gazetted to Unattached List (Territorial Force) to command Bridlington School O.T.C. May 1919 as Captain O.T.C. (Lieutenant-Colonel, Territorial Force).
