About

From The Liverpool Echo, 27 April 1950:

Cotton Broker’s Death

A prominent figure in cotton, Mr John Harold Coney, principal of Smith, Coney and Barrett, cotton brokers and merchants, Liverpool, has died. Mr Coney was born at Birkdale and educated at Marlborough, and on leaving school, in 1898, joined the firm named, of which his father was one of the founders 33 years before.

In addition to controlling this business, dealing chiefly in Indian-grown cotton, he was chairman of the Liverpool Uganda Company, which handles African growths. He was president of Liverpool Cotton Association in 1935-36, and a member of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board since 1937.

In the First World War Mr Coney was a sniping officer in the 12th Battalion, King’s Regiment (Liverpool), and in the second was commander of the Formby contingent of the Home Guard. He was an active sportsman, being football and hockey captain at Marlborough and later playing for the Liverpool Rugby Club. He also played hockey and lawn tennis for Lancashire, and was a past captain of the Formby Golf Club.

He had been a county magistrate for many years. Mr Coney, who lived at The Dunes, Formby, leaves a widow, a son and a daughter. At today’s meeting of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board, Alderman Edmund Gardner (chairman) said Mr Coney had served on the Traffic, Warehouse, Works and Finance Committees. The Board passed a resolution recording its regret and appreciation of his long and valuable service
