Born in St. Gallen, he came to Berlin at an early age. In 1907, he graduated from the Humboldt-Gymnasium (high school diploma) and subsequently studied Classical Philology and History without leaving the capital. He remained at the then-famous university as a student of prominent teachers (Norden, Wilamowitz-Moellendorff).
In February 1914, he passed the "pro facultate docendi" exam. After working at various training schools in the area (Fürstenwalde, Züllichau), he ultimately attended the Prinz-Heinrich-Gymnasium in Schönberg before accepting the call to Lübeck in 1919.
Of the more than four decades he spent teaching here, 38 years were spent at the Katharineum.
