About

From an article entitled ?Killed Instantaneously,? featured in the?Auckland Weekly News? on 4 October 1917: ?Particulars of the death of Lieutenant Keith Duthie have been received by his father, Mr. D. W. Duthie, general manager of the National Bank of New Zealand, in a letter from Colonel Stuart, who left New Zealand in charge of the first portion of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, to which body Lieutenant Duthie was attached.

?In his letter, Colonel Stuart said Lieutenant Duthie was in a dug-out with other officers, when a shell exploded, killing the former instantaneously. The other officers escaped with but slight injuries. A brother, Captain N. A. Duthie, who was in the neighbourhood, was informed, and he was present at the funeral. The deceased soldier had taken part in the campaign in Egypt and in the battle of Messines without mishap.?
