Doctor Robert John Jake passed away peacefully on November 30, 2013 at the Veterans Home of California-Yountville. He was born January 9, 1923, to Ruth Wruck & Charles Guy Jake in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Bob grew up in a working class neighborhood in Milwaukee. His academic and athletic talents earned him a scholarship to Milwaukee University School for high school. He captained both the tennis & basketball teams while there. Bob excelled at tennis and was Boys National Champion in 1938.
In 1940 Northwestern University offered him a full ride academic/athletic scholarship and there Bob played tennis and basketball for the Wildcats. While at NU he studied pre-med.
World War II interrupted his education and he volunteered for the army in 1943. During that time he served stateside and eventually was sent to the University of Vermont to study medicine in 1945. Bob played basketball, tennis, and football for Catamounts.
In 1949 he took his residency at Columbia Hospital in Milwaukee. There he met student nurse Betty Bennett and 2 years later they were married. In 1952 he was called to serve in the Korean Conflict as a M.A.S.H doctor.
In 1955 he moved to Oakland, California, and went into private practice as a general surgeon. In 1973, he joined the medical staff at the Veterans Home of California in Yountville as Chief of Surgery. Bob spent 23 years caring for his fellow veterans and retired in 1996.
