Victor de Coubasch was born in October 1880 in Nikolaev (aka Mykolaiv), a city in southern Ukraine. During World War One, he reached the rank of corporal and was an interpreter at the Russian Base in the commune of Laval-sur-Tourbe in the Marne region of France. He later obtained French citizenship.
