Viscount Tiverton was born as Hardinge Goulbourn Giffard into a family of jurists with aristocratic descent.His father was Lord Chancellor of Great Britain
(1885-1886,1886-1892,1895-1905) and created 1st Earl of Halsbury and Viscount Tiverton in 1898. As it is custom with the eldest sons of peers,since then
H.G.Giffard was styled Viscount Tiverton.He succeeded as 2nd Earl of Halsbury,Viscount Tiverton (1898) and 2nd Baron Halsbury (1885) in 1921.
Just like his father he was a barrister (Inner Temple), a judge (Recorder of Carmathen) and a member of the House of Lords.
