About

The following short biography is based on the Wikipedia entry on Folmer Hansen in Danish, here: http://da.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folmer_Hansen

Folmer Hansen studied at the Metropolitan School, Copenhagen, in 1889; graduated in medicine from the University of Copenhagen in 1895; and studied basic medicine in London in 1903 and Santa Fe in 1911. As a doctor, he worked first at Blegdam Hospital in Copenhagen, and later in London, Cape Colony (1904-05) and La Paz, Bolivia. He also represented an English banking group in Abyssinia from 1906-09 and in Argentina from 1911-15.

During the First World War, Hansen worked for the Russian Red Cross 1916-18 and was head of the Danish Red Cross’ Petrograd branch in 1919. He became Danish Consul in Riga in 1921 (constituted 1920) and was Consul and Trade Attaché at the embassy in Stockholm from 1924 to 1955. He was chairman of the Nordic Association in Riga in the period 1920-23, Knight of Dannebrog, Dannebrogsmand, and was a member of a large number of foreign orders.

Folmer Hansen helped to introduce lawn tennis to Denmark. At the first unofficial Danish Lawn Tennis Championships in 1889, he won the men’s singles title and held it until 1893, regaining it in 1896 and 1901. (The Danish Lawn Tennis Championships didn’t receive official status until 1904.) In connection with the international tennis tournament in Stockholm in 1899, he defeated Crown Prince Gustaf of Sweden in the opening match. In the winter of 1898, he co-founded Copenhagen Golf Club, Scandinavia’s first golf club, and won its first club championship.

With the support of rhythm master Gustav Adolph Clauson-Kaas, Folmer Hansen went to Paris in 1909 to receive pilot training at Henri Farman’s flight school. The idea was that after the training he would buy an aeroplane for demonstration flying, but Farman’s training plane had an engine problem, and Hansen’s flight training was delayed. In order to still carry out the promised flights, the group behind Hansen hired the French pilot Georges Legagneux (1882-1914), who became the first person to fly in Denmark. The flight in question took place on 15 June 1909. During the month that Legagneux was in Denmark, he himself taught Hansen to fly and helped him to complete flight training.
