Charles Smith Hyman was born in August 1854 in London, Canada West, the son of Ellis Walton Hyman, a tanner and entrepreneur, and Annie Maria Niles. Charles was educated at Hellmuth Academy in London. In 1874, he started a shoe factory with his father in 1874 and, in 1877, a pork-packing plant for the English export trade.

Hyman was president of the London Board of Trade from 1881 to 1882. Hewas elected to London City Council in 1882 and was Mayor of London in 1884. In the 1887 general election, he first ran as a Liberal candidate against John Carling for a seat in the Canadian House of Commons, representing the riding of London, but was defeated.

Hyman ran again in 1891 and was elected, but the election was declared void and he was defeated in the resulting 1892 by-election. After losing again in 1896, Hyman was elected in 1900 and was re-elected in 1904. From 1904 to 1905, he was a Minister without Portfolio. From 1905 to 1907, he was the Minister of Public Works. He resigned in 1907.

Hyman won the men’s singles title a record five times at the early Canadian International Tennis Championship times, in 1884, and from 1886 to 1889. Ivan Lendl broke this record when he won the same title for the sixth time in 1989. Hyman also won the men’s doubles title twice at the same tournament, in 1886 (w. Isidore Hellmuth) and in 1889 (w. Robert Orr Shaw Wood). Hyman was also captain of the early Canadian national cricket team.

On 5 April 1876, in Westminster, Ontario, Charles Smith Hyman married Elizabeth Birrell, who was also from London in that Canadian province. They had two children together, a son and a daughter. In 1878, the mansion Idlewyld was built for the Hellmuths in London (it is now a hotel and inn). Charles Smith Hyman died in London, Ontario, in October 1926 at the age of 72.
