From The Courier-Mail (Brisbane), 10 March 1939:

Jack Grinstead decides to turn professional – Will change after Easter

Jack Grinstead, prominent Queensland tennis player, announced last night that he will become a professional immediately after the Central Queensland Championships, to be held at Rockhampton at Easter. He will undertake coaching work at Rockhampton for two weeks after the tournament, and will then embark upon business as a coach in Brisbane.

Grinstead has been in the forefront of Queensland tennis since he came to Brisbane from the Pialba district about 12 years ago. He comes from a tennis family, his father, Charles, being Wimbledon doubles champion in 1883 and runner-up in the singles the same year.

Jack Grinstead himself still holds the South Queensland and the South Downs titles and the hardcourt doubles with Lester Hancock. Grinstead gained his Australian cap when he played against Roderich Menzel in 1934, but he became an inter-state representative six years before, after playing with the Linton Cup team.

In his first year as a state senior player he won both his singles, and later in the same year he was the only Queenslander to take a singles rubber in Sydney. Those performances served to preserve his place in the state team.

Grinstead’s strength is in his back-of-court play. When Harry Hopman visited Brisbane in 1929 the young Queenslander achieved distinction by taking a set from the Australian player. In 1933 Grinstead repeated the performance against Jack Crawford, when the Davis Cup star was at the top of his form.

As there are no professional tournaments in Queensland, the Easter Championships of 1939 will mark Grinstead’s last appearance in a tourney. He will not be eligible to compete in this year’s state championships.
