Daniel Martella, 77, tennis and squash pro at the Wilmington Country Club from 1926 to 1949, died Saturday at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia, after heart surgery. Mr. Martella, who had been hospitalized about a week, lived at the Dorset apartments, 1301 N. Harrison St. Mr.
Martella began his career as an assistant pro at the Philadelphia Racquet Club in 1922. He was taught by Jack Soutar, national pro tennis champion at the time. He challenged and defeated the leading pros in the country in 1929, and was the "uncrowned champion" for a two-year period. He defeated Soutar in an exhibition at Pittsburgh in 1930 and later in a challenge match at the Wilmington Country Club. At various times, Mr. Martella held the New York State and Philadelphia District pro championships. He played in the first open tennis championship in 1938.
