Paul Arnold was the brother of fellow lawn tennis player David L. Arnold. They were the sons of Jessie Head Arnold, a merchant, and Elizabeth Arnold (née Cochrane). Paul and David Arnold were both born in Missouri, but the family moved to California when they were still children. Both of them became teachers, but took some time off in the late 1890s, when they travelled to Europe and successfully took part in some lawn tennis tournaments, with Paul Arnold notably winning the men’s singles event at the Championships of Berlin tournament in 1898.
