About

Canon William Doherty was the oldest of the three lawn tennis-playing brothers, his younger siblings being the Wimbledon champions Reginald Francis (‘Reggie’) and Hugh Lawrence (‘Laurie’). William studied theology at Oxford University before taking holy orders and becoming a clergyman.

In 1931, following the early deaths of Reggie and Laurie, and in their memory, William donated the Doherty Memorial Gates to the All England Lawn Tennis Club in Wimbledon. These gates were erected at the Church Road entrance to the club and still stand there today.
