Victor de Trey was the eldest of the eight children – six sons and two daughters – of Dr Frédéric Armand Louis Émile de Trey, known as Émile (1846-98), a dentist, inventor of dental products and businessman, and Léa Élisabeth de Trey (née Pittet). Like his father and several of his brothers, Victor de Trey also studied dentistry, in his case at the University of Philadelphia (his father had opened a business in that American city). The family also ran businesses in London and Zurich. Victor de Trey married Fanny Carolina Simon, with whom he had three children.

From the Gazette de Lausanne, 12 March 1945:
Deaths
The death has occurred in Lausanne at the age of 73, following a fall, of Dr Victory de Trey, a former dentist well-known in Lausanne. On Saturday, 3 March, Dr de Trey had a fall on the staircase in his house that appeared to have hardly affected him, and was able to return to the Hôtel Lausannois where he was staying this winter. However, complications occurred and he passed away without suffering four days later.
Dr Victor de Trey was one of the members of that great family of de Treys which founded, in Zurich, a dental products business known throughout the world. Dr de Trey practised as a dentist for many years in Basel and later in Lausanne. He eventually had to give up his work following an accident.
