Law’s Loss – Judge Edwards – Death Last Night – Brilliant Career

THE death occurred last night of Judge Edwards, formerly of the District Court Bench. Judge David Sutherland Edwards was born at Coonabarabran, New South Wales, in 1871, the son of a well-known stipendiary magistrate, and was admitted to the Bar on May 11, 1899. But in his early days he was a schoolteacher at Newington College, which he had attended as a student.

He soon built up a steady practice in the jurisdictions of the District Court and Circuit Court, thus acquiring a knowledge of the common law and the criminal law. His scholastic career at the University of Sydney was brilliant, and he secured the degrees of B.A. and LL.B. From his earliest youth he was an enthusiastic sportsman and a devotee of lawn tennis, in which he represented the State on many occasions. He was also a prominent sprinter.

Judge Edwards was a man of much tact, and, as a District Court judge, he administered the law with intense fairness and impartiality. He endeavoured on all occasions to give good counsel to delinquent youths. He did not believe in great severity of sentences, and whenever he could give a lenient sentence he did so, with the view, possibly, of reclaiming the offender. In 1929 he was put in charge of the electoral machinery of New South Wales, and he displayed much ability in his administration of this very intricate department.

He is survived by his widow [née Beatrice Ella Dakins Elmer], three sons and one daughter.
