About

From The Sporting Globe (Melbourne), 19 July 1933:

Early Victorian Star Pass – Francis J. Highett

Victoria’s second lawn tennis singles champion, Francis James Highett, who won the title in 1880, died last week, at the home of his daughter, Mrs H.C. Kaye, East Malvern, in his 83rd year. Mr Highett took a great interest in tennis always, and regularly attended all the Victorian meetings when held at the Albert Ground. He lived long enough to hear that Jack Crawford had regained the world’s championship for Australia, and died three days later.

The first Victorian singles championship was held in January 1880, on the Oval at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, where all the early championship meetings were staged. Augustus F. Robinson won the first title, and Mr Highett won the title at the next meeting, held in November the same year. He was a member of Victoria’s first team to play New South Wales, in 1885, and also played interstate tennis in 1886, 1887 and 1888.
