Obituary – Dr Percival Clennell Fenwick

The death occurred at Sumner yesterday of Dr Percival Clennell Fenwick, the founder of the radium department and, for many years, an honorary surgeon at the Christchurch Public Hospital. Dr Fenwick was the son of Dr Samuel Fenwick, of Harley street, London. He was born in London about 1870 and was educated at University College, London, and graduated M.D. from Saint Thomas’s Hospital. After his graduation he served as a ship’s surgeon for two or three years.

He served in the Boer War and the first World War, and between 1914 and 1919 commanded the No. 1 and No. 2 New Zealand General Hospitals. He was awarded the C.M.G. during the First World War.

He was appointed honorary surgeon at the Christchurch Public Hospital in 1924, and was a former member of the North Canterbury Hospital Board. He was honorary chief commissioner of the New Zealand Boy Scouts between 1929 and 1934.

Dr Fenwick was one of the first in the Southern Hemisphere to use radium for the treatment of cancer and was a member of the British Empire Cancer Campaign Society. A member of the St. John Ambulance Association, he served as a lecturer and an examiner. He was a lay canon of the Christchurch Cathedral.

Dr Fenwick is survived by his wife [née Ellen Mona Evelyn Wright], his daughter Mrs Gwendolen Goodwin, and his son, Mr Christopher E. Fenwick.
