Born in England, William Barton emigrated to New Zealand in 1877 and worked at the Bank of New Zealand in various cities during his professional life there. A great sporting all-rounder, he notably played ten first-class cricket matches for West Coast and Auckland in the 1880s. He was also a prominent track-and-field athlete, a champion croquet player, and a rugby union player and referee. He also enjoyed bowls, golf, rowing and hunting.
