From The Daily News (Perth, W.A.), 10 March 1897:

Death of Mr Edward R. Boddington

It is with regret that we have to announce the death, at 7 o’clock last night, of Mr Edward R. Boddington, assistant accountant at the Union Bank, Perth, and a popular and prominent man in sporting and athletic circles. The end was very sudden. He was at the office as late as Saturday last, and on Sunday, although the weather was very warm, he went golfing.

In the evening he became ill, and was confined to bed at his residence, Esperance Villa, in Howick Street. Rapidly the patient became worse, and it was deemed advisable to remove him to Miss McKimmie’s private hospital. This was accomplished between 6 and 7 o’clock on Tuesday evening. He died only 20 minutes after his admission. Dr O’Connor, who attended Mr Boddington during his illness, says that the cause of death was a bad attack of summer diarrhoea. He considers that fatigue caused by recent night work at the bank accelerated death.

The deceased was 34 years old, and was born in New Zealand, where he filled a position in the Union Bank. He was transferred to the Perth branch of the institution about 18 months ago. He was an all-round athlete, and prominent in several departments of sport, being a most useful member of the Metropolitan Cricket Club, secretary of the Perth Golf Club, and champion lawn tennis player of Western Australia. The latter distinction was earned at the recent tournament, when he also won the handicap singles event. He was also a cyclist. In New Zealand he had earned fame as an athlete.
