Taking up the sport at the age of 17 Keith Spurgeon won more than 50 Kent titles in singles, doubles and mixed doubles championships. After his active career he became an umpire. He umpired 35 years at Wimbledon.
Away from tennis Mr Spurgeon, who spent his working life with oil giant, Shell, sang with the Orpheus Choir in Tunbridge Wells - having moved from Pembury with Shirley to Great Bounds Drive in Bidborough in 1976. The couple played played regularly for Tunbridge Wells Lawn Tennis Club , both picking up titles in the senior age groups.
