About

Hugh McArthur, a native San Diegan, passed away peacefully at his home on October 4, 2014. He was 103 years old. Hugh leaves behind his two children, five granddaughters and nine great-grandchildren.
Hugh was graduated from San Diego High School in 1929 and attended San Diego State. It was at San Diego High where he met his bride to be Ruth Naomi Upton. They were married at All Saints Episcopal Church in 1937. The newspaper announcement read "Miss Upton to Wed Tennis Star." Hugh was an active member of the church until his passing; for many years serving on the Vestry and also as Senior Warden. After leaving Western Metal Supply in 1940, he was a founding partner of Southern Equipment and Supply Co.. Hugh was active in several local organizations including Lions Club, San Diego Wholesale Credit Association, Purchasing Agents Association, Balboa Tennis Club, and others. He spent his retirement years tending his beloved rose garden, loving wife and beautiful home. He would occasionally hit a tennis ball or two with family and friends - and enjoyed his ongoing participation and involvement at All Saints Church. Hugh reached 103 years with a strong faith in God, kindness and serving others. He has the admiration of family and friends for his humble nature and principled ways. His unselfishness, honesty, integrity, love and old fashioned "hard work" inspired us all. Everyone loved "Hughie." His family and God were always his priority. We are grateful for the wisdom he shared unbeknownst to him. He will "keep up the good work" in heaven.
