About

Like a comet, it was Lund's rise at the tennis club of Düsternbrook in Kiel. At the age of 12 or 13, the dentist's son from Lornsen street had come to the club, where his extraordinary talent was quickly recognized. At the age of 16, he became German junior champion in 1928 for the first time and he defended his title in the following year. His name quickly appeared in the German ranking and the student of medicine followed a call to the capital, from then on played for Rot-Weiß Berlin. At the time his friendship with Gottfried von Cramm just began. In Davis Cup, he formed with Cramm a strong double for a while. He was also German college champion in the 1930s.
Sporting highlight in the life of Kay Lunds was undoubtedly the year 1937, in which he - then with Denker and dr. Herbert Tuebben - was placed in the German rankings just behind Cramm and Henner Henkel. In the Davis Cup Interzonenfinale against the United States he played in a double on the side of Cramms. That doubles, which practically decided on the overall outcome, has entered the German tennis history: Cramm / Lund had match ball against their opponents Allisson / van Rhyn.
