A businessman by profession, Hans Wunderly ran the family tannery, Wunderly and Co., for many years. An all-round sportsman, in addition to lawn tennis, he also played football, golf and sailed. He was president of several sports clubs during his life as well as an honorary member of the Swiss Automobile Club. He was also a keen hunter.
On 20 September 1898, Hans Wunderly married Nany Emma Volkart (1875-1962); she also took part in some lawn tennis tournaments. Nany had a close friendship with the Austrian poet Rainer-Maria Rilke (1875-1926), who wrote her several hundred letters over the years. His letters to her were preserved, but her letters to him were not.
