Frank Eberhardt Is Dead At 85 (with photo)
Frank Eberhardt, 85, retired Salina businessman, died Tuesday at Ottawa where he had been hospitalized for 1 1/2 years.
Mr. Eberhardt, a member of a pioneer Salina family, had lived at 735 S. Santa Fe. He left Salina in 1961 after the death of his wife, Katherine.
Mr. Eberhardt was the son of Christoph Eberhardt, a lumber merchant who came to Salina in the 1860's. He joined the father in the lumber business in the early years of this century, and eventually acquired the business. It was in the 100 block of South 5th for many years.
Now A Parking Lot
When he retired, Mr. Eberhardt sold the property to the City of Salina and it became an off-street parking lot.
As a young man, Mr. Eberhardt was a champion athlete, particularly skilled at tennis and bicycle racing. He won the Kansas singles tennis championship several years in the early 1900's and teamed with his brother, Fred, to win the doubles championship several times. The brothers also won amateur titles in the Missouri Valley at Kansas City and the midwest tourney at Omaha, Neb.
To win one of his many championships, Mr. Eberhardt defeated the Pacific Coast champion, then the seventh-ranked player in the U.S.
He held several world's records as a bicycle racer.
Mr. Eberhardt was active in Masonic organizations, holding a 33rd degree. He was a member of the Scottish Rite, the York Rite, and the Isis Shrine.
He was a member of the Methodist Church, of the Salina Gridiron Club, and The Coffee Club.
Surviving are two sons, Chris, Dallas, Tex., and Charles, with the Voice of America in Viet Nam; a daughter, Mrs. M.S. Winter, Jr., Lawrence; two brothers, Fred F., 421 S. 8th, and Charles, Ft. Smith; two sisters, Mrs. B.I. Litowich, 509 Fairdale Road, and Mrs. Vera Hiller, 124 W. Prescott, and five grandchildren. A son, Fred, was killed in service during World War 2.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Rush Smith Funeral Home, Dr. J. Russell Throckmorton officiating. Burial will be in Gypsum Hill cemetery.
