A merchant by profession, Percy Jones, as he was known, was the brother of fellow lawn tennis players Frederick, Harold and Reginald Jones. They were four of the children of William Henry Jones, who was also a merchant, and from Walton-on-the-Hill, Lancashire, and Margaret Jones (née Grindrod), who was from Liverpool.
